Bronkhorstspruit Dam Nature Reserve
Gauteng
Called “Bronkies” by locals, the Bronkhorstspruit Dam Nature Reserve offers a great weekend getaway for Gautengers. With over 200 bird species recorded in the reserve, it’s the perfect place for birders to observe a variety of feathered residents.
Birds to look out for include Spike-heeled and Red-capped larks, cisticolas, pipits, Orange-throated longclaws and various owls. Anglers will be kept busy too, as the waters are well stocked with bass and other fish.
Bronkhorstspruit Dam is also a popular watersports venue, offering clean water and consistent wind for fun catamaran sailing and windsurfing. You can even take a spin on a jet ski. And for those who just want a peaceful stay on the waters edge that’s far from the big city, there are camping spots and resorts with swimming pools and restaurants.
